Torque wrenches are perfect at ensuring an accurate and consistent tightening of nuts and bolts for anyone in the automotive and mechanical industry.

Picking the right Torque Wrench

How to pick the Range of the Torque Wrench

Cars require a torque wrench with a range of 13.6-203.5 Nm (10-150 ft-lbs). This range covers most of the torque specifications for common automotive fasteners, such as wheel nuts, cylinder head bolts and suspension components.

Trucks, especially heavy-duty trucks, a higher range is needed, such as 67.8-338.9 Nm (50-250 ft-lbs) or sometimes even higher. Trucks often have larger and heavier components that require higher torque for proper tightening.

How to pick the Torque Wrench Drive

The correct Drive depends on the size of the fasteners and the torque range. Find the general guide below for choosing the best Drive for your Torque Wrench.

1/4″ Drive: Typically used for small fasteners with lower torque requirements, such as those found in electronics, motorcycles, or bicycles.

3/8″ Drive: Suitable for medium-sized fasteners with moderate torque requirements, such as those found in automotive engines and chassis components.

1/2″ Drive: The most common drive size for automotive work, suitable for a wide range of fasteners including wheel nuts, suspension components, and engine parts.

3/4″ Drive: Used for larger fasteners with higher torque requirements, such as those found in heavy machinery or large trucks.

When selecting a drive size, consider the torque range of the wrench and the size of the sockets you’ll be using. It’s also a good idea to match the drive size of the torque wrench to the sockets you already have in your toolkit to ensure compatibility. We also have Quality & Professional Torque Wrench adaptors that will fit onto our torque wrenches.

How to use a Torque Wrench

1.First things first, refer to the Car, Truck or Manufacturer’s service manual to select the correct Torque setting. These specifications indicate the recommended torque values for tightening specific fasteners, such as wheel nuts, cylinder head bolts and suspension components. The manual should also specify the torque sequence for multi-fastener components.

2.Ensure the socket matches the fastener size and attach it to the Torque Wrench.

3.Adjust the torque wrench to the preferred torque setting and set the Torque Value. All our torque wrenches have a knob or dial to set the value.

4.Hold the handle of the torque wrench and apply force in a smooth, steady motion until you hear or feel a click. This indicates that the desired torque has been reached.

5.After the click, stop applying force immediately and your done! Congratulations, its that easy. Use a regular wrench to check the tightness of the fastener if you want to double check your work.
